Causes: Centers to Support the Independence of Specific Populations, Human Services
Mission: To provide therapeutic horseback riding, carriage driving, equine assisted therapy, and Special Olympics to anyone with physical, mental, or emotional challenges, and to improve their quality of life through horsemanship, competition, and the healing power of the horse.
Results: At 3 years old, Kathy was kicked in the head by a horse! Doctors said she had a 50% chance of survival and would never walk again. Before she could even sit up again, Betty Gray had her on a horse. As time progressed Kathy was able to gain strength, coordination and balance. Even though she is still having some paralysis on her left side, Kathy has been doing therapeutic horseback riding for over 40 years. Betty founded Stirrups ‘n Strides Therapeutic Riding Center Inc. in 2007 with her late husband Wayne Gray. Therapeutic horseback riding is a powerful tool that helps people of all ages and backgrounds to heal, grow and thrive. It offers a unique opportunity to connect with horses, learn from natural instincts and to develop new skills and insights along with healing mentally and emotionally. With over 100 volunteers, just this year alone, and 1000’s of hours put into this program we are making a difference in many lives. Therapeutic horseback riding is a valuable and rewarding experience for Special Olympics athletes. Through the competition of Special Olympics, the horse is used as a tool to help the rider achieve their goals, whether it is improving their physical abilities, learning new skills, or simply having fun.
