Mission: Special Olympics is a year-round international program of sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. By using sport as a vehicle for social change, Special Olympics Virginia strives to create opportunities for meaningful interaction and self discovery for everyone. The organization?s goal is to open the heart and mind of every Virginian to the value and ability of persons with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics Virginia Inc. is the state program of Special Olympics Incorporated.
Programs: Special Olympics Virginia, Inc. a program of Special Olympics, Inc., is made up of 27 local programs offering training and competition in as many as 17 different sports for children and adult athletes with intellectual disabilities. More than 8,000 athletes around Virginia currently benefit from the program, which offers approximately 2,000 competition opportunities per year. Programs at the local as well as state level are organized and conducted by more than 20,000 volunteers across the state.
