Mission: The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a voice for the poor. It works not only to alleviate poverty but also to discover poverty's root causes. The Society stands up for the poor, fights for justice for the poor, and combats the alienation of the poor from society. The Society provides emergency material assistance, and increasingly supports and encourages recipients to become personally empowered and free from the need for ongoing help.
Programs: Emergency assistance programs, general/other: 156 conferences with over 15,000 volunteers provided food, clothing, medical, dental, employment and other assistance to more than 188,000 needy families and individuals.
thrift shop operation: 12 thrift stores distributed over 230,000 of clothing, furniture and applicances to an estimated 15,000 needy families.
camps/retreat programs: provide 500 disadvantaged youth a summer camp experience along lake huron in the rural county of sanilac, mi.
our van elslander family center located at 3000 gratiot ave. In detroit collaborates with several mission partners to provide specialized programs to help individuals and families lift themselves up and out of poverty. The center houses a child care center, free non-acute health and dental care, free legal services and other human service providers.
