Snow Camp Sanctuary in Snow Camp, NC, runs a rescue that claims a 501C3 status for Wildlife refuge. It is not since they characterize themselves as a cat/dog rescue/sanctuary. The conditions there are unsanitary and there is only one person tending to dozens of animals to include cats, dogs, geese and some farm animals. Buildings there are run down and shelter is inadequate for housing cats outside. The buildings are not insulated and bedding inadequate for cold weather. I and others have taken cats there and had to extract them due to their having contracted serious URIs from having been housed improperly. A drafty shed with a wire wall and door and just a cardboard box and light throw is insufficient for 24 degree weather at night in February. I am not the only one with such a story. Many cats have died in their care. Currently Animal Control has given them a pass simply because they meet the inadequate ordinance in the county of simply having food and water out. Cats are not required to have any testing before being put on the property. There are feral cats let loose out there and no way to control or retrieve them if they get sick and need care. THIS IS A HOARDING SITUATION. The owner is continually soliciting in rescue groups to add more cats to that 'so called' sanctuary. She has stated to me that a thousand cats would not be too many. I saw dozens out there in filthy conditions with many biohazards around. I have pictures taken on March 11 2024. The problem as an Animal Control officer explained to me was that there was insufficient ordinance in Alamance County to address the situation. The only requirements of the ordinance are that food and water are available. It does not address hoarding or even the evidence or requirement of veterinary care. I took a feral cat that I'd trapped since their feeding site was destroyed but had to retrieve her after I heard about the conditions there. There are many more people with the same story as I. The woman is a hoarder and is continually soliciting for animals to add to her hoard.
