Johnny Higginson and Shadow Hills Riding Club changed our family’s lives. Always a voice of advocacy for veterans, persons struggling with addiction, and other underserved populations, Johnny and his team of amazing volunteers stepped up when my daughter was rehabilitating from a medical crisis. By surrounding her with love and encouragement and introducing her to the therapeutic connection with horses, Marissa was able to learn to walk, balance, and regain range of motion with her arms while all the time having fun! I have watched Johnny and his horses awaken trust and joy in people who had lost faith in themselves and the world. What happens at Shadow Hills Riding Club is sometimes miraculous and always joyous and fun. I’m a therapist who’s worked around horses for years and I’ve never seen it done better anywhere else. Nonprofit Overview
Mission: The mission of Shadow Hills Riding Club is to implement an expansive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate healing, learning and growth.
Results: Over 600 people served since 2009, across multiple populations. SHRC has created a unique sobriety and recovery program, Saddles and Serenity. Our veterans program, Saddles for Soldiers, has saved lives and helped to re-integrate US veterans into the civilian community. Our Therapeutic Riding program has helped hundreds of children and adults with special needs to feel empowered, confident and connected through Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies.
