Mission: Sea promotes engagement with community and spirited environmental stewardship by connecting youth and adults in real-world learning, hands-on citizen science and meaningful service to protect and restore our puget sound environment.
Programs: Sea: engaged in 9 bringing learning to life programs (325 students) based at fort casey state park, camp casey conference center and deception pass state park. These programs involve engaging students in community based / environmentally focused learning expeditions that link to their academic learning. Sea involves the teachers in the planning and development process and engaged in "pre expedition" classroom instruction / presentations. These programs included the entire 5th and 6th grade of langley middle school with support from the south whidbey schools foundation.
in addition, sea collaborated with calyx and young women empowered to engage in the "no child left inside" program, providing programs at south whidbey state park, fort casey state park and deception pass state park for south whidbey academy high school students (50 total students) that included career exploration with state park staff, personal exploration, learning about invasive and native species and local forests. Sea's calyx program successfully concluded its pilot outdoor, nature connection program at south whidbey elementary school as part of this program. It reached 16 at risk girls (grades 3 - 5) attending the public schools through the weekly, year round program at the sw elementary school campus, and focused on nature, life skills and stewardship.
in its sixth year, the calyx program has served more than 225 children through its year-round nature and service based learning programs, supporting authentic learning for the whole child by working in and through nature and fostering care for the natural world. It works in coordination with wa state parks and provided 36 weeks of place-based programming for children ages 5-11, primarily at south whidbey state park, with an emphasis on stewardship, nature and life skills.
