Mission: To promote, protect and restore the natural habitats in san diego county's canyons and creeks. We do this by fostering education and ongoing community involvement in stewardship and advocacy, and by collaborating with other organizations.
Programs: Community involvement, education and sustainable volunteer stewardship through development of "canyon friends" groups. Engages youth and adult participants in free educational canyon tours, clean-up and restoration events throughout san diego. In 2017-18 sdcl facilitated 1,445 youth participants and 2,974 adult participants, with 654 of these being repeat volunteers. San diego canyonlands generated 13,822 volunteer hours during this fiscal year. Many of these events are collaborations with dozens of other non-profit organizations including girl scouts, boy scouts, ocean discovery institute, i love a clean san diego, urbancorps, san diego mountain biking association, san diego state university, mesa college, sierra service project, week of hope, various public and private schools, audubon society, and the natural history museum. In addition, we partner with the san diego public utilities department, the city of san diego park and recreation open space division and several united states military groups. Worked extensively this fiscal year with the city's open space division and the mayor's office in establishing a master permit to streamline permitting for canyon restoration and enhancement projects. This project is now partially funded. Significant progress was made on our project to rehabilitate four degraded canyons in the under-served community of city heights. Trail building for the 5-mile loop trail has been completed and restoration of 14 acres of natural habitat in manzanita, swan, hollywood and 47th st. Canyons is in progress and will be maintained with our youth, educational, and stewardship programs.
