Mission: Roots ethiopia, inc. Is a non-profit that exists because it believes access to work and education are the foundations for building a poverty-free world. It believes that there should be no barriers to ethiopian families succeeding in work and at school. It assists families to send their children to school, it supports women to create valuable local market work, and it joins with communities to improve their schools so everyone has a chance to learn.
Programs: Learning resource projects provide resources and support for improving the quality of under-resourced rural schools so they can raise the quality of educational opportunities for the community. Resources include: materials and equipment for the classrooms, labs and libraries; sports and leadership program resources; continuing education and skill development for teaching professionals, and repair of substandard school facilities. During 2017, the organization funded support and/or projects for 14 rural schools serving approximately 15,000 students and their communities. The organization also provided professional development for 60 school staff in science learning and special needs support; opened 2 more special needs classroom in the snnpr region; expanded the youth sports leadership program; and built a school latrine as part of its pilot wash program.
school sponsorships provide the resources for students to afford access to and excel in quality educational opportunities. Between january 1, 2017 and december 31, 2017, the organization funded more than 175 school sponsorship program participants.
income generating activities, combined with self-help savings groups, create opportunities for households to develop and maintain sustainable small business and savings programs so families can build a better future for themselves. Between july 1, 2017 and december 31, 2017, the organization funded 60 new small businesses in the self-help savings groups program. 100% of participants in the self-help group program are women.
the well communities program provides targeted relief and support to families involved in roots ethiopia programs (e. G. Iga/shg, school sponsorship) that need a bridge to stability for continued participation. Expenses may include: iga support in communities without an shg group; one-time expenses that benefit a specific community of rural, at-risk families; aid for unforeseen medical costs that create undue financial hardship; temporary relief for an emergency housing crisis; etc.
