The Rescue Mission is horrible. Had to go back there in 2022 for the first time in about 7 years. 7 years ago you get an intake which took till late 3rd shift even if you were there all day got a permanent bed after being there three nights in a row and having done PA. Now you have to be approved by PA as the staff member said when I got there in 2022 her exact words “We have to get paid or you can’t stay” so you can do 211 and get a “temp” approval to stay but you don’t get a bed you sleep on the lobby floor with a blanket if your lucky. You have to go yo PA the very next morning to get a shelter form to prove your homeless ( who pretends to be homeless?). You take that form back get an intake done which is there only improvement in 7 years it got done in about 30 minutes. They lie and say beds are all full which after observing the dorm I was in, that dorm always had 4-5 beds open which shockingly enough is the case on every dorm which there are 7 men and 1 women so simple math (low end figures) 4*8 is 32. Yet there is always a ton of ppl sleeping on the lobby floor why? All these donations that ppl give to help us the homeless the homeless see none of it. It goes in there stores to make money to make more stores same goes with the state money and federal money the homeless see none of it not a hat a glove a coat socks shoes (Discount shoe repair annual drive to get shoes for the homeless 1000s of shoes not one homeless person has gotten one the get fixed and sold at their stores) shirts pants etc homeless see nothing. The mission is ran like a prison curfew at 9pm don’t be a second late you won’t be able to get in even though it’s advertised as a 24/7 shelter. 7am curfew to be out of the dorms drugs are rampant can’t walk down Dickerson with 10 ppl asking if you want molly weed crack etc. the drugs are done in every bathroom there and outside. Ppl set the firealarms off at all hours. Food is terrible 99% of the time set up there cause issues. Not once do they help with housing there are ppl who have been at the mission for a year still no help. But what do you all care we are just worthless humans who don’t deserve help even ppl who fell on hard times for a bit but actively do what they are suppose to still sub human because they became homeless, but again The Rescue Mission staff board CEO etc sit comfy with there 6 plus figure salaries with there 3-4k apt in downtown Syracuse. It’s sad you put a BS public image out like you help the homeless but in fact don’t do anything for us con ppl out of money and food a clothing with these events and fundraisers telling your donors it goes to help the homeless when it doesn’t 0% of it helps the homeless. My next step is record the mission inside show the ppl what it’s really like I’m sure NBC CBS ABC and Fox would love this the actual truth about the Rescue Mission. Cya on the news.
They pay protestants to give spiritual "care" at the Rescue Mission. I don't like that because I'm not Protestant!!!
I am the chairperson of the chairitable commitee at J.R. Clancy. We at JRC are dedicated to contributing to the Rescue Mission and do so every year.
There is no reason for anyone to be hungry or homeless anywhere. The efforts the Rescue Mission make in seeing that people in our community are taken care of are outstanding. Additionally, helping people prepare for employment, helping in finding them employment and offering hands-on job readiness is such an important and positive thing. This organization is such an important part of our community and we are very happy to contribute in their continued success moving forward.

For the past two years, Vestal United Methodist Church has been sending three ladies and a meal each month to the Rescue Mission at Whitney Avenue. It has been our privilege to witness the change in the residents unfold right before our eyes. The joy that this service brings to us, outstrips the small contribution of resources and people. Our congregation supports this project enthusiastically, as one of our local missions. I am the shopper for this meal and now even the butcher is on our advisory panel! I believe that the success of the Rescue Mission is because it is a faith-based project. The residents are treated with care and respect and no one is required to believe anything. It simply is faith in action that is palpable. Even as I write this, I am smiling. Can't be helped!
I have been involved with the Rescue Mission Syracuse for several years. Started out doing small tasks which motivated me to get involved more each year. It's a fun place wo "work" and the feeling of helping others is incredible. They do so much for their clients and community. A few events I've been involved in are Walk A Mile in My Shoes, Run & Ride for the Rescue and the Annual Fall Festival for the entire community. Not only do I appreciate all they do, but the clients do as well. It is truly a LIFE CHANGING experience for all! Thank you for all you do!
I have been a regular donor for MANY years in addition to doing the Ride for the Rescue (62-miles) each year. It goes without saying that the Rescue Mission does such a great job helping out the less fortunate in our community and helping to turn lives around for many. They also run a great & fun event with the Ride for the Rescue - and raise a lot of money to help their clients!
We are an event planning and production company and have worked with the Rescue Mission on many fundraising and awareness events over the last several years. We are constantly inspired by the dedication and commitment each and every employee and volunteer has to fulfilling their mission. They truly care and are conscientious stewards of their resources. Our company chooses every year a not for profit to donate our time and resources. For the past 2 years we have chosen the Rescue Mission.
It is amazing as how this orginazation can take care of so many and get them going in the right direction. It humbles me to see how they do it. I own my business and try to help when I can. They always look happy and appreciate what little we do for them. We never feel pressured to help and to me that's why they are successful in there orginazation. It's an honor to be a small part of this group of people and volunteers.
What a great organization ! After taking a tour I realized the Rescue Mission is so much more than a "soup kitchen" and I was eager to volunteer. The staff is great. They make you feel very welcome and appreciated for any assistance you can give. I would highly recommend getting involved with the Rescue Mission. Lives change here.
I am a single mother of a young child (under 2) and the rescue mission has helped me by providing clothes every month for my daughter and I. This helps me out by saving money that I do not get a lot of each month. Also if i am in need of food, diapers, wipes, personal care items, they try to help out the best they can. This rescue mission really is a wonderful place and I am extremely grateful for them.
I became involved with the Syracuse Rescue Mission a few years ago through my church and a friend at the Mission. My involvement has been as a volunteer and as a member of the Mission's Planned Giving Committee. They have stated their mission very clearly and have been very true to it. The management is passionate and quite capable from the board to middle management. The down trodden of Syracuse are served in wonderful ways by wonderful people. The Mission's forward vision is well thought out. It is great to be involved with this organization.
I was first introduced to the Whitney Rescue Mission, Binghamton NY, when I delivered a donation from SEFCU at the end of 2012. I was so impressed by their mission, their staff, and all that they do for our community that it became a lasting relationship throughout the year. Vickie Collazo and I have become great friends with helping the community as our main focus. I was able to promote a partnership between the Rescue Mission and the Comminity Hunger Outreach Warehouse that has worked to benefit both parties. I look forward to fund raising events and the upcoming Telethon as a volunteer. The Rescue Mission is the kind of non-profit that I am proud to know and be a part of.
This organization is amazing. What they do with the resources they have is incredible. I have volunteered weekly and donated for more than 7 years and have seen firsthand what this organization does. Money stays local and they continue to find new and innovative ways to help the poor and homeless of the CNY community. They are not just about feeding and housing the poor/homeless. They have programs that help people get back on their feet, treat their addictions and learn work and life skills. They live up to their name of being a "rescue" for so many.
I am a student at SUNY Upstate Medical University, and have been getting involved with the Rescue Mission in many ways. I am a strong advocate of their mission to help the homeless, which is a huge problem here in Syracuse. They get them a roof under their head, food and also spiritual care which is hugely important to the process. I have been helping out by organizing shoe drives with them and acutally with the help of many of the staff at the Rescue Mission we were able to set up a clinic to serve the clients and use our Medical training to try and assist in anyway we can
The Resuce Mission is an amazing organization that helps to change peoples lives. It is similar to "teach a man to fish" - they give clients the tools to totally transform their lives. They offer full support to nourish body, mind and spirit and to transition people back into society. I am honored to be a volunteer!
