Mission: Development of lives and livelihoods in pemba island, zanzibar, tanzania.
Programs: Design and construction of a 5-classroom nursery school in the village of maziwa ngombe, micheweni district in north pemba. Double-shifted classrooms serve 400 students per year from the village and surrounding communities. Nearby elementary school was upgraded with water and power at the same time.

Marine conservation is an essential goal in pemba, where as many as half the island's population of half a million depend on fishing or derive some income from it, as fishermen, boat builders, fish sellers, etc. The islands's coral reefs are heavily overfished and have to be protected by the local communities that use them.
12 marine buoys and chain imported from dubai, combined with mooring rope and anchors and provided to zanzibar gov. Dept. Of fisheries, wete office, n. Pemba to be used to set up new fisheries conservation areas on pemba's coral reefs. This is essential for health of marine resources that the whole island depends on, as described in previous project description.
continuation of support for vanilla farmers with planting grants to expand production. 6 farmers were supported this year, adding to 20 previously supported.
continuation of irrigation program for small farms. A small-scale drip irrigation system was designed and installed at a village agricultural co-op in s. Pemba.
support of university of hawaii graduate student study of exploitation of pemba's coastal mangrove forests by seaweed farmers. Seaweed farming is an important income source for about 15,000 individual farmers, but mangrove trees are the main source of wooden supports in the farms, leading to high cutting rates.
