Mission: Passages, inc. Is a faith-based non-profit community organization dedicated to enriching the quality of life for children, fathers and mothers. Passages strives to provide self-sufficiency resources that inspire and impower individuals to lead the lives they most desire. Passages hosts training classes and retreats; provides transportation to prisons; provides clothing and a means to prepare for, obtain and maintain employment. To strengthen families through our reunification program and to build self-sufficiency through job readiness and placement.
Programs: Jobs for dads: a broad job readiness, fatherhood development and life skills program that serves 400 to 500 men and women annually; up to 85 percent of participants successfully complete the program; 20 to 25 percent leave the program for college or a vocational program, and 30 percent are gainfully employed within 90 days of completing the program. On average 75 -85 percent of individuals enrolled in the program complete the four-week curriculum and 30 percent of those who complete the curriculum obtain employment within 90 days. Another 25 percent enter vocational training programs or start college courses.
specialized services for non-support offenders: local judges sentenced low-level offenders who are not paying their child support (called non-support offenders) to this cuyahoga county-funded program in lieu of jail time. Through specialized services for non-support offenders, dr. Brian moore, passages founder and executive director, delivers nationally acclaimed fatherhood development: a curriculum for young fathers designed by partners for fragile families and authored by pamela wilson, msw and jeffrey m. Johnson, phd. Approximately 20-30 fathers visit passages once a week during a 12-week period for two hours at a time to discuss and build their personal development, life and relationships skills; a total of 160 men are anticipated to complete the program this year. Dr. Moore and two of his employees are master trainer certified in the fatherhood development curriculum.
fathers & sons retreat: since 2000, approximately 1,400 dads (mostly non-custodial dads) and their sons have spent three summer days at camp burton in burton, ohio. This year's the retreat ran from august 17-19; 50-75 boys ages 8-17 of all ethnicities and their fathers are expected to attend. Fathers and sons enjoy a series of workshops to improve their relationships. Anecdotal feedback from participants and supporters indicates that the program enhances father and son communication; develops conflict resolution skills; and improves parenting skills.
suited for men: this program previously operated as career gear, a separate non-profit organization which merged with passages in 2008, and which became a passages program in 2010, provides employment interview appropriate clothing and employment skills training to low-income men enrolled in a job readiness program. Since its inception in 2000, the program has served 4,500 men seeking a second chance to become self-sufficient and supportive of their children and families. The program continues to meet this niche need, providing clothing and programming to 300 to 500 men ages 18-30, mostly african american, every year.
