Causes: Citizen Participation, Environment, Environmental Education
Mission: Our Green Goals’ mission is to reduce individual carbon footprints through an interactive website supporting green behavior commitments. Using opportunities presented by social networking and guided by environmental behavior research, the project empowers ordinary citizens, particularly those who are new to “going green,” to take effective, long-term action, joining teams and improving local communities in pursuit of healthy, sustainable lifestyles.
Results: Our Green Goals is the sole project of Earth Day Resolutions, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and a GuideStar Valued Partner. Our team of five volunteers is currently developing step-by-step guides in preparation for the database-driven development necessary for interactive online engagement. We are also currently engaged in a fundraising effort to raise the money needed to design, develop and promote the website, as well as computer coding which serves as the foundation for user interaction and project evaluation.
Target demographics: K-12 Classrooms Families Workplaces Fitness Groups Seniors

Programs: Upon browsing ourgreengoals.org, visitors will find previews of behavioral commitments as well as summaries to achieving them before signing up. After selecting among a list of specifics, participants are given pledges and other proven encouragement methods, plus a print-friendly guide to performing chosen behaviors without the need of an internet-enabled device. Offered options include energy efficiency, alternative transportation, renewable energy, resource reduction, food, and other consumer choices. Meaningful actions, both singular and ongoing, are presented in highly readable, uncomplicated ways. Users of all ages are encouraged to invite friends, family, colleagues and neighbors, expanding the project’s reach and allowing team formation and mutual support in achieving goals. By using a web interface and mobile device app with online supporting materials, the organization can reach many people and sustain operations for years at little added cost. Differing levels of participant progress can trigger automatic feedback, encouragement and support. Our Green Goals will be promoted primarily through social channels, partnerships, and traditional media. Because the program is socially oriented and team based, diverse groups such as K-12 classrooms, workplaces, and senior centers can create a tailored program to adopting greener behaviors and personal health goals appropriate to them.
