Mission: Oakdale neighbors is helping neighborhood residents and others improve their lives and create a neighborhood of vitality and grace by discovering, developing, and connecting skills and resources. Significant activities include boston square community bikes, youth development, tax credits and refunds, neighbor organizing and action, business development, and green space development.
Programs: Boston square community bikes program: 242 bicycles were refurbished and distributed or sold for affordable, sustainable transportation. 82 bicycles were recycled. 983 repairs were facilitated through self-help, direct assistance or the sale of parts and supplies. Two schools participated in the safe routes to school project. 87 volunteers contributed 1024 hours to refurbishing bicycles.
youth development program: 21 youth learned math and entrepreneurship during the summer learning academy. Staff contributed 340 hours (for 867 contact points) and 42 volunteers contributed 236 hours to children through school-based youth mentoring.
tax credit and refund program: 13 volunteers contributed 532 hours to complete 240 tax returns, generating $295,000 in tax credits and refunds for lower-income families.
other programs and accomplishments: 1) advocacy program: 22 neighborhood residents were assisted with personal problems or referrals. 2) neighborhood organizing and action program: oakdale neighbors facilitated 127 actions by 81 neighborhood residents through conversations, meetings, and events. 3) mixed reviews program: mixed reviews, a web show about equity in grand rapids, produced and distributed three episodes and several other short interviews and live videos. 4) other programs: oakdale neighbors mobilized 67 volunteers who contributed 386 hours to other programs of oakdale neighbors including community gardening and neighborhood events.
