Programs: North shore horizons and new beginnings, inc. Provides support and housing to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. We serve primarily lake county minnesota with a population of 10,631 spread out over 2,062 square miles. In fy 2016-2017, north shore horizons provided crisis intervention services to 358 adults and children. Of those, 228 adults and children were assisted 753 times to gain financial assistance through public programs. 263 individuals and children received direct financial support and safety planning services. We provided legal advocacy and informed survivors of their crime victim rights 585 times to 158 clients, assisting in filing court orders, reparation claims, notification, and accompaniment. "i needed the support. Just mentally my self-esteem and depression kept me from making good choices. I was desperate with nowhere to go. They [nsh] helped me with budgeting, finding a house and a job, and not end up in a similar situation," said a client. In addition, north shore horizons facilitates the lake county coordinated community response team. The team completed the adult sexual assault protocol in 2015, a lethality assessment protocol in 2016/17, and still gather regularly to identify areas of improvement as well as to share pertinent information.
north shore horizons and new beginnings provided housing to 7 families during this fiscal year, eliminating the need for victims to choose between homelessness or returning to their abuser. Nearly all required assistance in working toward financial stability. North shore horizons new beginnings housing provided 7 households with permanent and tranistional housing with supportive services to assist clients in obtaining their self-defined goals towards self-sufficiency. 5 of the households increased employment, job training programs or enrolled in post-secondary education. 2 additional households maintanined their income. 132 additional adults and children received assistance filing other applications for housing coaching on improving rental history and advocating on their behalf with landlords to prevent homelessness. North shore horizons provided emergency housing through hotel stays to 19 participants for up to 4 days. Transportation was provided to shelters when they had an opening.
the prevention and education program includes an annual 40 hour sexual assault training for crisis line volunteers. In addition, annual trainings include safe and strong child sexual abuse prevention programming for elementary students, consent, online safety, and healthy relationship education for 8th and 10th grade students, training for school personnel and parents, and professional and community education and trainings. The 2016-2017 fiscal year saw 1,121 adults and students participate in these successful programs. In response to community feedback, north shore horizons launched "stand up north shore" in 2015, a community initiative using the research-based green dot curricula promoting adults learning bystander intervention skills to help youth be safe. In addition, north shore horizons participates in a variety of community events, reaching hundreds more.
