Causes: Health, Home Health Care
Mission: To improve access to quality health care in wisconsin's rural and underserved communities, primarily through the education of present and future health professionals.
Programs: North central wi ahec priorities 1, 2, & 3 focus on increasing supply and improving distribution of primary care providers, improving diversity of the health care workforce, and enhancing the quality of health professions education programs and community service opportunities, particularly in the areas of public health and preparation for inter-professional practice. Ncahec programs center on recruitment and support of health care students, promotion of primary care practice, support of faculty mentors and preceptors at community-based training sites, creation of regional councils to assist the university of wisconsin school of medicine and public health (uwsmph) with priority setting, maintenance of web-based health career resources, expansion of community-based training opportunities for students especially in dental health and mental health services, public health workforce programs, cultural competence training, inter-professional education, and programs to increase the number of african-american, native american, hispanic/latino and asian students entering health professions training programs. Examples of our many programs include: wisconsin express (student immersion program focusing on amish/mennonite, hispanic/latino, native american, asian, and low-income communities), community health internship program (8-week internship at local public health agencies), uwsmph 3rd year primary care clerkship programs, preceptorship with uw 4th year medical students, health career summer camp for 21 high school students, hosa events, career counseling/recruitment presentations in middle/high schools, future physician's day for high school students, inter-professional collaborations conference, inter-professional case competitions.
north central wi ahec priorities 4 & 5 focus on providing a supportive infrastructure for local providers/practitioners in underserved areas, including opportunities for continuing education and community-based research. Ncahec also addresses health disparities and access issues identified in regional needs assessments by creating student projects and other community outreach activities. Programs center on training opportunities for community health workers and peer health advisors, programs designed to introduce students to the field of public health, continuing education for current health care professionals, health literacy activities and continued work with wisconsin literacy, medical library information resources, and consumer health information resources. Org), continuing education events (substance abuse conference, genomic medicine outreach), health literacy programs, and continued support of the community health workers in wausau.
north central wi ahec priorities 6 & 7 focus on providing organizational leadership and collaborative infrastructure for wisconsin health care workforce planning efforts. Ncahec aims to establish benchmarks and implement effective program evaluation with measurable outcomes. Ncahec efforts are aimed at partnerships with local organizations for outreach activities, partnerships with statewide workforce development groups, collaboration with federally qualified health centers and other health care delivery sites, and participating in ahec state-wide tracking systems. Examples include: partnerships with university of wisconsin system and medical college of wisconsin, wisconsin literacy, wisconsin health literacy, medical/legal partnership with judicare and bridge community health clinic (fqhc), north central wi health care workforce alliance membership, specifically co-chair of the health careers exploratory committee, etc.
