Mission: To "keep our kids connected to nature"! This mission sounds simple, but today on average 7-16 year olds spend up to 8 hours a day using an electronic device. With parents worried about "stranger danger and some kids not having access to nature due to urban setting or adults not able to drive them to a parks these are even more problems with kids getting outdoors to play. The children's garden was created to provide a safe, whimsical & interactive outside space for children of all ages. At the children's garden we promote the magic of gardening, environmental awareness through our nature programs, literacy in our story time and creativity in our art programs. We encourage playing in the dirt!
Programs: We offer many nature, gardening & art classes every week many of them free! Our garden programs include: "can you dig it", "mama mia we are making our own pizza garden" & "munch, crunch grow your own lunch"! These programs have been developed to teach kids the "magic of gardening" by providing educational tools about good soil, composting, the importance of earthworms and how to plant. Our gardening classes are offered weekly & monthly and every class each child is able to plant a seed, an herb or succulent to take home and watch grow. Normal attendance is between 12 & 20 kids weekly depending on the day. When we have field trips the number can grow to 30-50 kids. Each gardening class lasts about 45 minutes. Our objective with this program: we are dedicated in teaching nature & garden classes to kids to get them outside in nature, to understand that their food comes from the earth & not the grocery store and to encourage basic gardening skills to grow their own food for sustainability & good nutrition! Our nature programs include: "nature explorers" & "magic nature box" both programs are fun & interactive to get kids excited about mother nature. Whether it is our "magic nature box" where our nature activity for the day is hidden as a treasure in our nature box or our baskets & magnifying glasses are gathered up for our "nature explorers" program we are always off on a fun adventure to explore the wonders of mother nature! Is it an earthworm, a butterfly, a water bug or a tree we love to observe & learn about nature. A sweet craft ties our morning together! These nature inspired programs are offered weekly and are free with admission & free to our garden members. Approximately 12 - 24 kids attend these programs depending on the week & field trip can bring the total to 30-50. Objective with our nature programs: to get children outside in nature & unplugged from technology. To learn & explore all the wonders of nature and to have creative play. Our art programs include: "art rocks", "art in nature", "wildcrafting for the wild child" & "the fairy ring. Fairies, elves & magical things! " each art program that we offer is entwined with nature finds that the children must go out and gather. All children get to express their own unique creativity which helps foster confidence as well as learn art appreciation. We always have an art & craft station set up for free in our community festivals as it sparks the imagination! We normally see 12 - 24 kids participate in the art programs! We do hundreds of kids for free when we do community events at our garden or when we go outside to do public events. Our objective with our art programs: foster creativity with nature's materials, learn different art mediums and challenge their imaginations! Our reading programs: "nature tales" & "step-into-a-story" are two wonderful story times that promote literacy. Our "step-into-a-story" is always nature inspired and a little handful of listening dust (glitter) helps restless ears. In "nature tales" each story is about a sweet animal and each child is encouraged to pick a stuffed animal to hold from our "book buddy basket". We love reading to children especially when we have big events we always have story time! Objective for our reading programs: the main goal is to promote literacy and the other is to allow for their quiet imaginations!
