Mission: The neighborhood coalition for shelter is dedicated to providing housing and support that can transform lives and working with community partners to reduce, prevent and ultimately end homelessness. Ncs was founded on the premise that homelessness is the responsibility of the entire community. Established in 1982 by religious and community leaders on manhattan's upper east side, ncs offers an array of housing and comprehensive services, including counseling, substance abuse treatment, vocational and educational programs, employment support and an information and referrals program.
Programs: Substance use treatment - the agency operates a new york state licensed outpatient substance use treatment program specifically designed for men and women who are homeless, formerly homeless or at risk of homelessness. The program provides treatment and support that lead to improved stability and increased sobriety for clients with mental illness and substance use disorders.
residence programs - the agency provides housing and supportive services to homeless men and women and young adults. The agency operates a 65 unit permanent supportive residence in manhattan for chronically homeless single adults and a 46 unit facility in the bronx that provides supportive housing to young adults who are homeless or aging out of foster care.
vocational, educational and employment program - the ncs vocational, educational and employment program, options, is designed to address the needs of homeless, formerly homeless and at-risk individuals. The program helps overcome barriers to employment including lack of marketable job skills, fragmented work histories and poor adaptation to workplace expectations (e. G. , punctuality, attendance, communication skills). Ncs provides a continuum of services including assessment; ged support; interview and resume preparation; referrals to job training; job placements and employment support.
