Mt Shasta Education Foundation

Programs: In the year 2010, the mt shasta education foundation awarded $33,380 in grants to the k-12 public schools in mt shasta. Because msef has only two fund raisers a year (a membership drive in may and our gala in the fall), we are very proud of the fact that in a town of 3500 we were able to help our public schools so significantly. The foundation also has $26,353 in an endowment fund, the interest of which will likely eventually fund scholarships to the students of mt shasta. This year mt shasta elementary school (grades k-3) received $9,620. 69 to purchase leveled reading books for basic and below basic 2nd graders; manipulative materials for kindergarteners; new library books; hand drums and instructional materials for music classes; a bar code scanner for library books; and 4 cassette/cd players with headphones for kindergarten and 1st grades. Sisson elementary school (grades 4-8) was awarded $12,698 for senteo student response systems for 8th grade english and social studies; new books for the library; 6 laptop computers for the mobile computer lab; and 70 copies of "seven serpents trilogy" for 7th grade students for english/history studies. Mt shasta high school (grades 9-12) received $9,809 to purchase microscopes and balances for science classes; 4 cordless microphones for drama; 2 guitar amplifiers and 4 headphones for guitar classes; 4 portable keyboards for music and choir classes; and new books for the library. Finally, jefferson high school (mt shasta's alternative high school) received $1,100 for a four-week cultural awareness, multimedia program instructed by nathan johnston, a former mt. Shasta high school student and harvard graduate. With the severe budget cuts our schools face, msef's 100% volunteer staff is more committed than ever to the foundation's goal of enriching the educational experience of mt shasta's approximately 1200 public school students.
