Nonprofit Overview

Mission: Michael Bergen, has a charity he's had for over 12 years called "Michael Bergen's Hands to Heart, Toys for Disadvantaged Children." In 2000 he was given the United Way Volunteer of the Year award. The American Red Cross and Salvation Army send referrals to him of kids in need. The majority of his time is spent in December hand-delivering toys to boys and girls at every single Head Start school from Bonner to Blue Springs from Atchison to Garnett. Last December he set a record by delivering over 4,000 toys! On May 16, 2009, I attended Michael Bergen's 12th Spring Annual Night Train Run. His organization puts on two motorcycle runs a year - one in the spring and one in the fall. The purpose of these runs is to try to get as many donations and toys for Christmas as possible. It was beautiful day and a fantastic turn out. There were lots of smiles. Everyone was safe and having a great time for a great cause.

A non-profit has no requirement to file for a 501(c)(3). Michael Bergen's Hands to Heart, is a registered non-profit with the State of Kansas. A 501(c)(3) has many requirements, requirements that involve high administrative costs. Because Michael spends little to no money on overhead/administrative costs, more money is available to spend on the purchasing of toys, coats/clothes, and other items to benefit children and their families. I would also like to add Michael maintains a full-time job while running his charity. Those who are involved with his charity, know firsthand the amount of time and money he spends to provide 11,000 local school children with toys each year. He also visits at least two reservations a year, providing multiple trailers full of toys, coats, clothes, food, and household necessities for hundreds of Native families. He provides local families with toys for their children to open on Christmas day, is partnered with KCPD to provide toys during their Blue Christmas, and the list goes on and on. I'd say he does pretty well stretching the "40,000 dollars of more raised every year."

Are you sure this is a nonprofit? Does anyone keep track of the money raised? They are not a 503 c. 40,000 dollars or more raised every year and no one knows where the money goes. Sketchy at best, and for anyone to give accolades without knowing where exactly these funds go, disheartening. This is not a nonprofit
