Masbia on 14th Ave may be the most amazing restaurant in the United States. Each table has an artificial flower arrangement to give each diner privacy. The food is hot, fresh, and served with respect. All three of those statements demonstrate why Masbia is such a wonderful organization. You see, diners don't have to pay the bill. There is no check. There is a "cash register" that people can make a donation to, but it is not required. Every diner is treated the same, whether they pay or not. Dignity is a big factor here, because giving to the less fortunate must always, according to jewish law, at least, be given in a way that does not humiliate the recipient. I thought I would burst in tears when I saw this place, simple, unassuming, and rich with the richest spirit of all, the spirit of giving. How cool is that, that a hungry man or a hungry family can walk in and sit down to eat this way? When I lived nearby, it was fun to just walk in and donate a dollar or three, knowing that anyone who does so is participating in such a holy deliverance of the best within the human heart. It is simultaneously heart-swelling and humbling to watch the people who operate Masbia, going about their daily labors as if it were any other restaurant in the country. Sustained standing applause from me.
