Causes: Environment, Land Resources Conservation
Mission: Land conservation through the acquisition of land and conservation easements.
Programs: Mect provides land conservation through acquisitions of land & conservation easements and educates the public about the value of land conservation. We have roughly 1,500 acres under protection. In 2017 we provided grants for outdoor classroom programs in the manchester-essex regional school district, benefitting approximately 100 elementary school students. Trustees volunteered hundreds of hours to support: 16 guided hikes and nature identification walks; 4 trail maintenance events; a photo contest in partnership with a local bank and art studio; hosted the annual meeting with a program on the local effects of climate change. Trustees and staff worked with towns on several projects.
staff and volunteers continued the extensive research on wilderness parcels that have conservation value and may be protected in the future. We published and distributed two newsletters to 700 members, libraries and government officials in both towns , and an events postcard to every resident in both towns. We maintain a website, and continue with our capital campaign to raise our endowment to sustainable levels.
