I highly recommend Mamafrica Designs to all who care about empowering women and supporting children and families in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Congolese have suffered greatly through years of war – a war that has been especially brutal on the bodies of women and girls due to sexual and gender based violence. Mamafrica’s holistic approach provides education, healing arts, vocational training, and a fair and just wage, all of which will drastically change the trajectory of the future for the women, children, and families. With their income, mamas pay their children’s school fees and for those with younger children Mamafrica provides a nursery/preschool. Mamafrica’s co-founders, Ashley Nemiro and Aline Malekera, strive for the highest quality in their products and in the support they offer the women and children in their care. They take an additional and important step to ensure that the fabric used in their products is manufactured in Africa, specifically in neighboring Burundi, thus maximizing the positive impact for people in the Great Lakes region. In addition, they are Fair Trade Federation members. Having just returned from a trip to Goma and Bukavu where I met with Ashley and Aline, I can tell you wholeheartedly that your financial support of Mamafrica will foster healing, self-empowerment, and will help the mamas rediscover the joy of living.
