Nonprofit Overview

Mission: Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves: high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. Upward Bound Houston serves three Houston ISD schools: Austin, Wheatley, and Milby High Schools

I was very blessed to work with the students of LNESC this summer as a Summer Component Activity Assistant. We attended classes at Rice University 4 days per week with field trips on Friday. The children were well behaved, eager to learn, and we received many compliments about our students. I believe that this program has been extraordinarily beneficial to these students. I feel this program is so worthwhile that I have already gone to a UB Saturday last month even though I am not working there any more. I have also indicated that I will be happy to continue to volunteer my time with this group. I consider myself part of the Upward Bound family now and I hope that this group will continue to receive the funding and support it needs to get these motivated students in to the colleges of their choice. If there is any criticism at all that I feel is valid, it would be the somewhat lengthy process required to arrange payments for outings, approve spending, and pay vendors. There were several things we would have liked to do that were not able to be arranged within the parameters of the requisition cycles. This process should be made easier so that we could better serve the students that are the basis of this program.
