Imagine you are 7 years old, you wake up to police officers in your bedroom, they hand you a trash bag and tell you, you have 5 minutes to put your personal belongings in the bag and leave. How would you feel, being handed a trash bag for your belongings and taken from your family and the only home you know?
I would be scared and embarassed having to carry my personal belongings in a trash bag, yet this happens in Wisconsin communities and across the United States. From my experience as a foster parent, receiving children with a trash bag of their belongings; or nothing at all is normal. We decided this was unacceptable, and created Duffels for Kids program.
Duffels for Kids program provides duffel bags filled with: fleece blanket, stuffed animal, storybook, flashlight, and personal hygiene items. Faith, Hope, & Love works with law enforcement, foster care, homeless shelters, domestic abuse shelters, and local schools. Faith, Hope, & Love, is endorsed by Racine County Sheriff Dept., Sturtevant and Mount Pleasant Police Dept.
Within the first six months of operation, we delivered over 600 duffel bags, and in 2016; we are on track to deliver 2,000. Each duffel bag, including its contents; costs $25.
