Causes: Community Coalitions, Environment, Natural Resources Conservation & Protection, Water, Water Resources, Wetlands Conservation & Management
Mission: The mission of the Little Blue River Watershed Coalition is to support, encourage, and promote the enjoyment, restoration, protection, and prudent management of cultural and natural resources within the entire Little Blue River watershed. Our vision is to have a citizenry that is informed as to the cause-and-effect relationship of their actions within the watershed and that actively participates in solving watershed issues while supporting each other in their efforts. The Coalition was formed out of concern for storm water management and protection of natural resources. Urban watersheds under development are among the most threatened of ecosystems today. Sprawling development and increased impervious cover have resulted in non-point source storm water pollution, stream bank erosion and flooding. Conventional development and storm water management methods have proved costly and ineffective in protecting green space and the many benefits that we draw from nature. Development patterns are altering the habitats of both wildlife and people. Since 1982, the Kansas City metro area population has increased by 17 percent while developed land area has increased 37 percent. To effectively address these issues, people must view themselves as part of a watershed. Urban and nearby rural residents need to learn how their land-use decisions affect one another and how they might work together to achieve common goals.
