Causes: Environment, Land Resources Conservation
Mission: To preserve the rural character of lincoln, to acquire and maintain undeveloped lands in town, to develop trails therein, to establish sound conservation practices, and to encourage preservation, enjoyment, education and scientific study of lincoln's natural areas.
Programs: Education: educational events in 2017 included six walks, two films in an environmental film series, and four programs, one of which involved collaboration with lincoln's council on aging and local senior living facilities. Educational programming at the pollinator meadow included a public walk led by the town's conservation director, a program teaching people how to use an online citizen scientist tool, and a six week field science class at the birches school for students in grades 2-3. The annual meeting celebrated the 60th anniversary of the llct and featured a nobel laureate who is an international expert on human health and the environment. Special projects included the design of four nature-themed backpacks for use by lincoln library patrons with funding support from the friends of the lincoln library, and reusable water bottles for the 500+ annual race participants. Llct publications include a monthly wildlife column in the local newspaper, lincoln's open spaces calendar for 2018, and a package of photo notecards entitled "four seasons of conservation in lincoln". Llct continued to sell its two books, the nature of lincoln and a guide to conservation in lincoln and its 2013 trail map.
stewardship: llct staff and volunteers performed annual maintenance of 40 miles of public trails. Llct was not able to monitor all of its deeded conservation land and conservation restrictions due to the resignation of its stewardship coordinator. However, several key properties were monitored and we have subsequently hired new staff. Llct participated in workdays for the control of invasive plants, including garlic mustard. An enforcement action against an individual who cut down trees and shrubs on a conservation-restricted property was concluded. An agreement on reparation was reached in may 2017. New trees and shrubs were planted in early july. Throughout the summer the area was monitored and the plants watered. At the pollinator meadow, llct staff and a volunteer intern repaired fencing, installed directional signage, put up an informational kiosk, and posted project-related materials. Staff and volunteers also provided general maintenance of the meadow, including removal of invasive species from spring through fall.
acquisition: a 3. 71-acre parcel of land on bedford road (parcel id 127 19 0) was deeded to llct by rlf on november 27, 2017. This parcel, originally part of the wang property acquisition, is adjacent to other land owned by llct and will become part of the wheeler road conservation land.
