Causes: Animals
Mission: Ledyard C.H.A.I.N. is a community based group whose purpose is to offer support to the Ledyard Animal Control, to offer education that will enrich the lives of pets and their owners, and to support efforts and initiatives that will benefit the welfare and safety of companion animals in the Ledyard and Gales Ferry area.
Results: Pet Food Assistance Program: For 2018 we distributed 4000lbs of dry food and 3500 canned food to the organization we assist. Spays/Neuters: To date we have been able to spay almost 150 pets at the Ledyard Animal Control and within our community. Medical Costs: Since 2013, we have covered the surgery and medical care for 6 pets who would not have been able to have been treated had we not stepped in to help as their medical bills where beyond what the shelter could afford. To date we contributed over $5650 toward the medical needs of the shelter pets. Trap-Neuter-Release: Our Oliver Project has made a large impact on our community. Currently over 125 cats have been spayed or neutered, cutting down on the kitten population in our neighborhoods. Kittens that were born in colonies have been pulled and were socialized and placed in loving homes.
Target demographics: pets in need at our local shelter, the Ledyard Animal Control, and other organizations that assist families with pets in need.
Direct beneficiaries per year: The Ledyard Animal Control, residents who use the Ledyard and Preston Food Pantries, the Ledyard Senior Center, and numerous other rescues and shelters with pet food and other pet supplies. We have also helped cover the cost to Spay and Neuter pets at the Ledyard Animal Control along with residents in the Ledyard and Gales Ferry area.
Geographic areas served: Ledyard, Galels Ferry, Preston, and surrounding communities
Programs: 1. The Oliver Project: A stray and feral cat assistance fund which covers the cost of spays and neuters for cats trapped by the Ledyard Animal Control. Additionally, we purchase humane traps and needed supplies to make the project a success. 2. Fixed 4 Life Fund: This fund covers the cost of spays and neuters for any pet that may find their way to the Ledyard Animal Control. By getting the pet spayed before it leaves the kennel it can increase their chances of being adopted and will end the change of any unwanted litters being born. In 2017, we also began offering vouchers to assist residents in the cost of spaying or neutering their pet. 3. Our Pet Food Assistance Program supplies food to the Ledyard Animal Control, Ledyard and Preston Food Pantries, the Ledyard Senior Center, , and area rescues, shelters, and organizations that help pets in need.
