Mission: The mission of latino u college access (luca) is to increase college enrollment and completion among hispanic students who are the first in their families to pursue higher education. (continued on schedule o)founded in 2012 luca addresses educational inequality by empowering high-achieving hispanic students to realize their academic potential through programming and mentoring which is culturally relevant and bilingual targeting both the studends and their parents. Focus areas include college selection and application; seeking financial aid; transitioning to and success in college; career exploration; internship opportunities; guidance in job searching.
Programs: Latino u scholars / college access program: launched in 2013, the latino u scholars program has assisted 100 students in applying and enrolling in college. High-achieving students receive one-on-one support from a volunteer coach/mentor; free act test prep and essay writing workshops; support in obtaining financial aid. 94% of the scholars are enrolled in 4-year universities (62% private). 58% are pursuing a degree in stem. 98% remain on track to graduate. The program targets low-income students (qualifying for free / reduced lunch). By successfully addressing the issue of under matching, 44% of scholars attend most selective to very selective institutions and have received over $2. 1 million in financial aid and scholarships.
first gen forward / college success & career preparation program: the first gen forward program ensures college persistence and success for latino u scholars once they go off to college. Students participate in this program throughout their 4 years of college ensuring they graduate and realize their career aspirations. The participants are offered workshops in college transition and career readiness including, networking, resume writing, interviewing, and internship search. Through partnerships with major corporations, students attend workshops at corporate sites and meet first gen latino professionals to serve as role models and mentors. 70 students are currently enrolled in the program and participate in a series of winter, summer and spring workshops.
school based community programs: latino u college access has delivered community programs to 4,097 parents and students since 2013. In partnership with 3 local school districts and high schools we conducted 17 information sessions in 2017. 600 parents and students attended spanish language presentations on the "pathway to college", "applying to college and "paying for college". Fafsa boot camps in partner high school computer labs assisted parents and students with the completion of the free application for federal student aid and ny state tap applications. In 2017 we assisted 360 parents and students at fafsa boot camps where 90% successfully submitted fafsa applications and 75% both fafsa and nys tap applications.
