Direct beneficiaries per year: Local hospitals to provide for emergency needs of cancer patients ($17,500); gas cards ($15,000); holiday gift baskets (300+); 270 hours of counseling for cancer patients and family members, and last, but definitely not least, 10,000+ meals to families living with cancer ($61,000).
Programs: Meaningful Meals Eating properly and nutritionally can be difficult for many cancer patients. For many, chemotherapy and radiation treatment alters taste buds, which changes flavor, making even favorite foods lose their appeal. Other patients lack access to healthy food items, or maybe faced with difficult choices like putting food on the table or paying a bill. L5 Foundation has created a program called Meaningful Meals to provide delicious, nutritious meals designed especially for the needs of cancer patients and their families. Single-serve meals are delivered daily or weekly, depending on each patient’s preference, by volunteers from the Knoxville Mobile Meals program. In addition to healthy food, patients get the added security of having someone check in on them regularly. Eligibility for the Meaningful Meals Program is determined by each treatment facility’s social workers or financial counselors. Transportation Assistance Program Fighting cancer is hard. Getting to treatment shouldn’t be. Yet many families in East Tennessee have a difficult time making the drive to a cancer treatment center for the many trips required to comply with a radiation treatment or chemotherapy infusion schedule. All of those trips take time and require money to pay for the gasoline. That’s why the L5 Foundation’s Transportation Assistance Program exists. L5 Foundation provides cancer patients and their families with gas cards to help them pay for the fuel needed to get to treatment. Gas cards are offered in partnership with Pilot Flying J at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, Thompson Cancer Survival Center and the Cancer Institute at the University of Tennessee. Eligibility for Transportation Assistance is based on financial need and is determined by each treatment facility’s social workers or financial counselors. Once a patient is determined to be eligible for the program, gas cards are disbursed at the treatment facility. 5 MESSAGES With 5 Messages, you will receive inspiring quotes, tips for living more healthfully, statistics that reveal the depth of the disease, and random facts about the world in which we live.
