Causes: Mental Health, Mental Health & Crisis Intervention
Mission: Kevin's song is a charitable organization dedicated to generating public awareness about the causes of suicide, its prevalence in our society and possible preventive measures. As an organization, we want to create a working community of professionals and advocates that will become the go-to resource in the metropolitan detroit area for offering knowledge, hope and healing to individuals, families and communities touched by suicide.
Programs: Suicide education and awareness: in november 2017, kevin's song sponsored its second annual conference: "the silent epidemic: a conference on suicide" at the inn at st. John's in plymouth, mi approximately 500 attendees. The conference drew medical residents, interns, nurses, etc from st. John's hospital, detroit receiving hospital, sinai-grace and henry ford hospital, as well as mental health professionals, first responders and others from across michigan.
documentary film: the film "death is not the answer" premiered on the first night of the 2016 conference. Kevin's song inspired the film by award-winning director keith famie and was an executive producer of the film. Since that night, the film has aired on pbs in detroit, been shown at various venues throughout metropolitan detroit and is scheduled to air throughout michigan this year on pbs. It has been nominated for a 2017 michigan emmy award. During 2017, kevin's song held a screening of "death is not the answer" at the war memorial in grosse pointe farms, michigan followed by a panel discussion of experts. It was attended by about 200 people. In addition, john urso participated in a panel discussion that was filmed for and aired on pbs detroit in conjunction with the airing of "death is not the answer. "
community outreach: kevin's song has been invited to speak to various groups, participate in mental health forums, serve on panels and has become a reliable resource in suicide prevention. Kevin's song is being recognized not only in the metropolitan detroit area, but throughout the state of michigan as well as nationwide for its programming and commitment to provide resources for those who have lost a loved one to suicide, are suffering with thoughts of suicide or are looking for ways to prevent suicide. Kevin's song has attended the knowresolve annual dinner; had a presence with a kevin's song table at and participated in walks for the american foundation for suicide prevention in detroit and in grosse pointe, and the barb smith suicide resource & response network in saginaw, mi; attended the annual survivors of suicide annual conference in macomb county, michigan; participated in the suicide awareness community forum in wayne, michigan; the screening of "the s word" by the bipolar research program at the university of michigan in ann arbor and the kadima mental health forum in bloomfield hills, michigan. In july of 2017, gail urso spoke to a luncheon gathering of showroom managers and interior designers at the michigan design center in troy, michigan to share kevin's song's message of suicide prevention and hope and healing for those touched by suicide.
