Programs: Healthy Families (HF) provide a system of support for new parents that is voluntary, family centered and strength based. Parents receive education and information about child development to promote positive parent-child interaction. The goal of HF is to reduce incidence of child abuse and neglect by supporting parents who are experiencing stresses in many areas of their lives. Prevent Child Abuse America reports that most physical abuse occurs before the age of 2. By addressing new parents at or near the time of birth, HF is able to provide support at the time when most abuse occurs. By teaching about child development and helping new parents understand what is realistic to expect from babies and small children, many of the frustrations that lead to abuse can be avoided. HF also works with the family to reduce stress factors that have been found to lead to child abuse. They help the family set goals and reach out to community resources to accomplish their goals.
