Juneau Animal Rescue

Programs: The city and borough of juneau contracts with the gastineau humane society to provide animal control and protection services in the city and borough of juneau. Officers provide enforcement of the cbj animal control and protection ordinances. Officers are also available 24 hours a day seven days a week 365 days a year to provide services and protection to any stray, injured, abused, mistreated, neglected, abandoned or lost animal. They also provide 24/7 services to individuals who have problems or concerns with an animal or its owners or who have been bitten or otherwise injured by an animal or who have injured an animal. During fiscal year 2017, animal control officers responded to 6,282 calls for action, impounded 476 animals, and returned 357 animals to their owners.

ghs provides shelter and care for all animals. We are the only shelter in juneau and the largest shelter in southeast alaska. We have an open entry policy meaning we will take any animal that is released to us, found with no owner, abandoned, unwanted, neglected or abused. All animals that we have in our care are temperment tested and checked for health then placed for adoption. All animals that are adopted are spayed/ neutered/ have had a vet check, received all of their vaccinations and are micro chipped and in the case of dogs, licensed. During fiscal year 2017, the shelter took in 222 owner relinquished animals and 243 unclaimed impounded animals, and adopted out 336 animals to new homes. Ghs also provides support for animals in communities throughout southeast, taking in unwanted or neglected animals from outlying communities.

the ghs clinic is responsible for the health and welfare of shelter animals as well as the health of animals whose owners meet our income requirements for services. Individuals and families in juneau who cannot afford the services of a private veterinarian can seek those services through ghs. Last year we provided spay / neuter; well animal; emergency care; assistance with training or behavior issues; and on going rabies and microchip clinics to well over 1,000 animals. In the event an owner is unable to pay, we will work with them to ensure their pet receives the care it needs. In the case of homeless or the elderly we provide special services at no cost. We provide low cost spay and neuter and rabies vaccination services to qualifying individuals who live outside of juneau as well as spay/neuter service for local shelters throughout southeast that cannot afford to have their animals cared for through private veterinary clinics. We also provide consulting services to communities throughout southeast to help them set up and maintain shelters and begin adoption programs.
