Mission: Our mission is to provide exceptional learning experiences and inspire lifelong environmental and community stewardship.
Target demographics: Students in school programs are 3rd-8th graders from King, Kitsap, and Snohomish counties in the Puget Sound region. While most of our students come from Seattle, many are also from suburban towns, tribal reservations, and rural areas. Approximately half of the students we serve come from underserved schools, where at least 25 percent or more of the student body qualifies for free or reduced price school meals.
Direct beneficiaries per year: Over 12,000 3rd-8th grade students from the greater Puget Sound area.
Geographic areas served: We offer outdoor and environmental education on our 255-acre Bainbridge Island campus, in Seattle schools, parks and neighborhoods, and at the Brightwater Wastewater Treatment Center.
Programs: IslandWood’s School Overnight Program provides hands-on learning experiences in nature that spark enthusiasm for science, strengthen team and individual leadership skills, and inspire environmental and community stewardship for 4th-6th grade students and their teachers. School visits from IslandWood graduate instructors connect the residential experience to students’ classrooms and neighborhoods to enable a holistic, enduring learning experience. IslandWood’s Urban Programs connect school science curriculum to watersheds and other natural ecosystems near schools and in the communities where students live. Additional training empowers teachers to lead science investigations outdoors without direct support from IslandWood. Additionally, IslandWood has partenered with the University of Washington to offer the Graduate Program in Education for Environment and Community. Through a 10-month residency on IslandWood’s campus, graduate students guide outdoor learning experiences for elementary school students participating in the School Overnight Program and engage in independent study projects while earning credits toward a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Washington.
