Programs: Providing financial support to poor indigenous guatemalan students to attend primary, middle, and high school, and career schools. Provided partial scholarships to 76 students to attend school and make it possible to complete their education. And for 10 students provided tuition to a private school, all school supplies, after school tutoring, and uniforms. Provide complete scholarship for one youth to continue to attend the university.
guatemalan construction projects - working with local community members we built two small homes for mudslide victim families and installed 150 efficiency wood-burning stoves in the homes of 75 families, saving money, improving health conditions and reducing the consumption of wood by 66%. This was done in three different rural communities outside chichicastenango, guatemala. The cost included all supplies, materials, and local skilled labor.
team travel projects - providing a transformational immersion experience to 28 missionary volunteers for an 11 or 17 day trip to the guatemala highlands. Participants installed wood efficieny stoves, built homes for mudslide victims, visited cooperatives & small family operated businesses, formed relationships with local helpers, participants, and learned about the culture and history of guatemala.
we assist poor people in developing countries to become economically self-sufficient. We purchase products from artisans, cooperatives, and small family run producers and sell them, thus helping them become self-sufficient and raise funds to do our development projects in the country. In 2012 we purchased over $27,000 worth of product, from some 27 vendors including three cooperatives. In a poor developing country this has a major impact on improving peoples lives.
provide a medical and dental clinics open to the poor communities of san juan and san pablo on lake atitlan guatemala. Open 5 days a week, serving local residents for $1. 28, which includes both the consult and the medicine. Services are provided whether or not a person can pay the fee. Our diabetes program, started over the summer of 2012 with the emory global health institute team, we have over 80 patients who attend weekly classes and have committed to controlling their health with medicine, check-ups and nutrition! In 2012, we had 5,451 medical patient visits and 805 dental patient visits.
