Mission: Hunger free vermont, formerly the vermont campaign to end childhood hunger, is an education and advocacy organization with the mission to end the injustice of hunger and malnutrition for all vermonters. Incorporated in 1993, we are a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to hunger prevention through expanding access to nutrition programs that nourish vermonts children and families.
Programs: Hunger free vermont expanded their 3squaresvt (food stamp) outreach to include the senior population as well as children and families. Hunger free vermont improves access to and participation in 3squaresvt (formerly known as food stamps and known nationally as snap), one of the most reliable, consistent, and dignified means to prevent hunger.
hunger free vermont expanded outreach on school nutrition with the goal of expanding use of the community eligibility provision which allows schools with a large percentage of at-risk children to provide universal school meals. Regular access to nutritious meals in school is a key strategy in preventing childhood hunger in vermont.
hunger free vermont's community education program consists of community hunger councils and the physicians' hunger course. The hunger councils bring together key community people to address hunger in the community on the grass roots level. The physicians' hunger course is an online course designed to assist physicians in recognizing and addressing the issue of hunger and malnutrition in their patients.
food stamp (fs) outreach - conducted statewide train-the-trainer sessions with staff/volunteers at service organizations on how to help eligible clients apply for fs. Facilitated statewide work group meetings to address participation barriers. Includes sending e-updates about the fs program to service providers. Creator grocer's guide to the fs program. Food stamp research - project to create and assess the effectiveness of a website as a technique to promote and increase access for individuals enrolled in the food stamp program. Education and advocacy - staff presentations to community and professional groups across vermont about the extent of hunger in vermont, the impact of hunger on children, and the array of solutions that can be implemented at the community and state level. The learning kitchen - this hunger free vermont innovated program provides hands on nutrition education and cooking training to youth, young adults, and adults to learn how to cook nutritious meals on a small budget.
