Well We'll Well. . .What a joke of charity so desperate for money they took "bribery "to bring down a 27 year old thoroughbred. . .came to a private livery yard in Pta east where we pay thousands per month to keep the animals pulled me off my own horse who I've ridden for 18 years and told me I can pay them R500 to have him shot in the head nice hey ? was their 1st attempt to get rid of him then they conspired with the group of individuals who called them out in the first place the horse My Horse was then slowly poisoned to death and made an example of by them to be having seizures that's what poison does 2 dum ugly ladies who actually hate horses thought they can teach me a thing or two it's a joke of a place they have No knowledge No care for animals especially Not horses it's the vague image they project as NPO'S truth is all they care about is MONEY and they got plenty of it for bringing my horse down . Rubbish and poor organization SIES SIES EN SIES DISGUSTING YOUR NOT HUMANS YOUR TRASH !!!!
Absolutely shocking manners they are uterly rude they force their opinion and aggression onto a person they offer to shoot horses who are currently in procces of treatments for R500 pathetic clearly desperate for money/donations. This is NOT the last Uv heard of Me !!!!!
They go the extra mile with a smile. Every animal that they come across will be cared for whether a horse or donkey or not. They put not just food in front of them but all of their love and time. I am proud to say that I support such an amazing organazation

You have to go to Highveld to see for yourself, even though the horses/donkeys/ponies have come from neglect, or a bad situation it is a very peacefull peace to be. The work they do and the dedication they have is amazing!!
I have known the Highveld Horse Care Unit since its inception as an extension of the Vereeniging SPCA, and have fostered/adopted 3 of their rescuees. Sadly, the first of these, Larkspur has just had to be euthanased to spare her the indignity and pain of an infirm old age. She was 32, and the HHCU gave her 22 good years of life after they rescued her as a "no hoper" in 1990. Their selfless, compassion, bravery and hard work cannot be sufficiently praised, and every cent of the funding they receive improves the lives of the many equines under pressure in South Africa and Lesotho.

I am in a strong position to review the Highveld Horse Care Unit’s value to equines in particular and society in general, having for 7 years shared the adoption of Thandi, their first rescuee.
In the late 1980s, when the Vereeniging SPCA rescued this little animal from pulling a coal cart, she looked more like a shrivelled sheep than anything equine. Bev Seabourne, the then SPCA manager and her staff pitched in to do something about the crying need for more help in the area. Several years later, the Highveld Horse Care Unit had grown so big that it became a separate organisation with premises of its own.
In June 1990, they rescued a thin, injured 9-year-old mare (who looked like a worn-out coir door mat) from a situation which, I believe, would have killed her in a very short time. Although at rock bottom, she moved with pride and dignity. We adopted her and now, 22 years later, our bright chestnut Larkspur is still a loved and respected member of our family.
These are just two good-news stories of very, very many that the HHCU have helped to write. Yet the crying need remains, particularly in Lesotho and among the donkeys of South Africa. Knowing the Unit and its people as well as I do, I am certain that they will all keep working tirelessly and selflessly bring out the best in people and their animals, to the benefit of many, because compassion is contagious.
HHCU does what only so many of us wish we could do. I do not have the emotional strength to put up with what HHCU does and therefore I help as much as I can with my financial donations monthly. They are a voice for each equine they rescue and give each rescued equine a second chance to experience a good life. It is unbelievable how human kind can abuse and neglect animals, fortunately there is HHCU to make a difference (and man do they try hard!) I really do appreciate that they try first to educate equine owners in properly caring for and maintaining the good health of their working equines, in essence this is making difference. But I am very relieved that in extremely severe cases they confiscate the equines and rehabilitate them. Thank you HHCU for all the work you do and for having the emotional strength to keep at it. I sleep better at night knowing that you guys are using every cent and resource that you have available to you to save the ill treated equines out there. I will work hard at my day job just so that I can keep supporting you financially. I believe in you guys. God bless*
In April 2011 it came to HHCU's attention that a very thin frieian mare was for sale by the previous owner. This mare more resembled a starving bovine than the baroque type frieian mare she was supposed to be. HHCU removed her from the owner and after a few months I was able to adopt this girl. I drove to thir premises to meet her first, and I take my hat off to every single person that works with the sad sad cases of animal neglect and cruelty. I am a medical professional and yet will never be able to deal with the pain and suffering these angels see on a daily basis. My friesian mare today is our happy, stocky paddock ornament..she will never be ridden. Not only was this girl starved, but she must have endured horrible acts of abuse and cruelty. If it was not for HHCU this mare would have been sold on,bred with and prob ridden..all with a oreviously broken pelvis and a shutdown soul. HHCU has my utmost respect and admiration. I adopted a mare from HHCU a couple of weeks ago,and i couldn't be happier. The help and service was fantastic, the work that they do is amazing. They made my dream come true.
This organization is of the utmost importance they not only rescue horese in distress but help to educate and assit with the working hosres and donkeys in the less fortunate arears were they are desperatley needed. I personaly have adopted from them . They are compassionate knowlegable and caring people who sometimes have to bare abuse . Without this organization our country would be a poorer place. They are angels . Bring care and respect to to the hard working equines and also thier owners. Please help where you can.
Highveld horse care unit gave me my dream back by giving me my amazing horse....he has brought such joy in my life, he is gentle, plasid and just WONDERFUL!!! I'm so grateful for the work they do and they are truely wonderful and caring people!!! I take my hat off to them for the work and effort they do for these animals!!!! You guys are amazing!!!
The Highveld Horse Care Unit do the most outstanding work. They sometimes work under cruel, inhumane, difficult situations but they always do their best to make the situations workable. They are compassionate, dedicated, passionate about what they do. They provide the most amazing services to everybody and never turn a soul away. I applaud them for their work, dedication and the fact they have limited resources to do what they do.
Highveld Horse Care Unit South Africa - Rescue Unit that survives on donations and fund raising. Does a wonderful job helping out in the townships with the cart horses and donkeys, always willing to assist owners who cannot afford to keep their horses anymore. Even travels to neighbouring states to assist their. Need all the help they can get to continue their great work.
I live in Port Elizabeth and support the local branch of the Horse Care Unit which falls under the HHCU. To this end, we could not do the work which is being done without the HHCU. They travel great distances, face unbelievably obnoxious people, face danger with abused animals and violent owners and NEVER ever turn away from a crisis. In fact, HHCU is now even going further than SA and now helping horses in Lesotho. The need is so great and the cruelty so and with HHCU being the only horse rescue charity, they desperately need every bit of help which is given. Not only do they rescue horses but they also educate people on caring for their animals as well as helping out with blankets, food, farriery, dentistry and whatever else is needed. I would request that you consider the HHCU highly as a most deserving charity.
Having visited the HHCU a few times, it touches my heart to see how much they do for the neglected and abused horses who may not have had anyone come to their aid if the HHCU were not around. They are very necessary for our country's horses and do amazing work.
Highveld Horse Care Unit works tirelessly to help horses that really don't have a voice. They are understaffed, underfunded, underequipped and still manage to do absolutely incredible work: Their Facebook page and Website publish regular success stories.
There is no value that I can place on the work they do. I have donated money and tack many times in the past and I know that every time it goes to a good cause. I have volunteered there as well, helping in the fields and giving the horses some much needed love and I can say that they are always looked after exceptionally well. They have all the care and attention they need to make speedy recoveries from abuse and neglect. Thank you to them for all the work they do in removing a bit of misery from the world
Highveld Horse Care Unit is a very professional, hard working non profit organization; that does outstanding work in South Africa. It is very clear to see that almost all the money that they receive goes to where it is needed; the animals. They do not spend it on nice cars. nice offices etc ( as many non-profits do)...I have lived in South Africa and now live in the US, and I would HIGHLY encourage anyone on the US wanting to make a difference to horses and donkeys in Africa to support this organization. They also do a lot of educating and helping people who need donkeys etc for their livelihood, but may lack the knowledge on training/treatment. Please support them, they really DO what their web-sites says it does ( and I have been there to see it.)
The HHCU are absolutely amazing and they will go to all lengths to protect our horses and donkeys. I cannot imagine what life would be like without them. Absolute Angels!
The highveld Horse Care Unit (aka HHCU) is a non profit organization that takes care of all equines far and wide. They provide their services, clinics, tack, deworming and hay to those that cannot afford it. They also try to educate people on how to better look after their horses, especially those that rely on their horses for an income.
The HIghveld Horsecare Unit is a non-profit organisation without any support other than from caring members of the public and adopters of horses / ponies and donkeys that become available. Working in hostile terrains and in situations for which experience cannot always prepare, these dedicated, caring professionals are always willing to go beyond the call of duty to rescue horses/ponies and donkeys. More often than not, they lack funds, equipment, medical supplies and basic welfare requirements but yet they still step up to the plate to ensure the safety and well-being of the animals they endeavour to rescue on a day to day basis. Their outreach programs to squatter farm residents has borne many success stories and has proven time and again that abuse of animals in these areas stems from ignorance of care. Many of these owners came back to show the staff the rewards of their hard work. The Jockey Club of South Africa needs to step up and take responsibility in assisting the Unit when complaints are laid against trainers who simply get rid of horses without first checking their new homes of their future care. These horses could be donated to the unit who would place them via their adoption program and in so doing ensure the welfare of the horse for time to come and also to recieve a small income via the adoption fee enabling them to carry on their wonderful work.
The highveld horse care unit are very special. They take every animal into considiration, does not matter how far. They always try to reslove an issue with the best intensions and then sometimes help needs to be called in as some owners do get a bit angry. They only think of the horses and donkies out there. They are always there to help no matter the time. All the work they do does make a big impact on the lives of the owners that learns from them and improves their horses. Its always loveley to see what big impact they have out there. If not for them there would be a lot of horses out there dieing and underfed and abbused, but they don't only care for the animals but the owners as well. The are doing a fantastic job.
The Highveld Horse Care unit is a Non Profit Organization that helps the horses and donkeys of South Africa and Lesotho get the ongoing care that they deserve. They hold workshops to educate the owners of animals in rural areas as well as providing dental care and hoof care and where possible free tack so that the animals who are relied on for a living can live the dignified and useful lives without being maimed by careless use of metal wire bits and whips. They take care of reported abuse cases as well as rehoming horses that can no longer be looked after by their owners. They are the saints of the Highveld and without them many animals would die horrible deaths and suffer needlessly from the ignorance of many people. Everyone who can should assist them wherever possible as they truly do the work of angels!
