Ken’s passion for improving the health care delivery systems in the most needy countries across the world is very evident when you hear him talk about his project in Pitesti, Romania and how that fueled his vision for HDI. HDI’s focus goes beyond treating the symptoms of poor health as many non-profits do so well already. They improve the system. HDI drives at improving quality and effectiveness of the local clinics and hospitals that can directly impact poor health in their area. Instead of treating symptoms, HDI gets at the root of the issue and instills best practices in the system. And the key is making each clinic and hospital sustainable in its approach for the long term positive impact on the community it is in. Because HDI does not handout medicine to treat diseases in health troubled countries, it is harder for supporters to see the impact they are making. But by improving the system that locally delivers the treatments, HDI is leveraging their efforts and effectiveness 100-fold over a ‘handout’ approach. They don’t give a man a fish, they are teaching many men how to fish effectively for their own long term provision.
