Mission: The primary purpose of the conference is to improve hurricane prepardness, response, recovery and mitigation in the state of florida, in order to save lives and reduce property damage. The scope of interest includes all aspects of the hurricane threat with a primary emphasis on meeting the needs of first-line responders in emergency services, fire, and law enforcement. To accomplish this, the conference will ensure the annual program emphasises the following: lessons learned from response and recovery from hurricane strikes in florida and, when appropriate, other coastal areas of the united states; state of the art programs and strategies worthy of emulation; new ideas being tested or considered; awareness of new or ongoing federal and private assistance programs available to local government; emergency management's role and other key agency roles, in hurricane prepardness, recovery and mitigation.
Programs: The governors hurricane conference (ghc) is conducted annually to educate those in attendence on issues relating to hurricanes so they may in turn educate the public and prepare for their safety. The ghc attracts emergency management related professionals from around the state, country and the world to attend training, state of the art workshops and partner networking events. The annual event was held in west palm beach, florida may 14-19, 2017. 1,670 attendees, exhibitors, guests and media representatives were in attendance. The 2017 ghc provided over 286 training hours to attendees. Additionally, 45 workshops offered panel presentations and roundtable discussions on a myrid of emergency response related topics.
