Causes: Children & Youth, Girls Clubs
Mission: Girls rock camp atl is dedicated to empowering girls and women of all backgrounds and abilities through music education, creative expression, and performance. We provide leadership opportunities, build self-esteem, and create a culture of collaboration between mentors, peers, and the broader community.
Programs: Grc-atl's core program is a six day summer camp for girls age 10-16. Campers are instructed in guitar, bass, drums and keyboards and participate in workshops geared toward encouarging freedom of expression, recognition of media bias and normative gender expectations and limitations, self-esteem through self-efficacy, collaboration and peer support, and respect for community. On the last day of camp, campers perform original songs written at camp in a premium concert performance venue. Campers are encouraged to bring their own instruments, however if they do not have their own, they are provided for them at no additional cost. Financial support to attend camp is provided for those campers who request it.
the guitar lab afterschool program was implemented this year to provide access to music for underserved youth, who were given free afterschool instruction in guitar and provided at no cost with an instrument to play and practice. Following completion of the program and proven dedication to their music, the attendees were given their guitars to keep. Implementation of guitar lab afterschool program to teach music to 12 girls age 12-14. Multi-semester program initiated.
implementation of ladies rock camp event, total participants = 41, increase of more than 50%. An annual three day rock and roll fantasy experience for women 18 years old and over. A mini version of girls rock camp, ladies form bands, receive instrument instruction, collaborate to write an original song, and perform that song on stage in a live rock and roll showcase on the last day of camp. Proceeds from this program event goes to support girls rock camp atl and strengthen the sustainability of our programs.
