Causes: Cancer
Mission: Ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community. . . So that no one faces cancer alone.
Programs: Counseling and support groups: gilda's club kansas city (gckc) offers professionally facilitated support groups and counseling sessions for all people impacted by cancer. Groups include living with loss and more. Counseling and specialized programs for treatment decision making and distress screening are also offered. Kid support includes a professionally led structured group for children ages 4-12, who have a loved one with cancer while the parents participate in a facilitated group. All groups are led by licensed mental health professionals trained in the gilda's club model. In 2017, there were 521 sessions.
classes and workshops: gckc offers educational workshops, including the frankly speaking about cancer series which focuses on specific cancer diagnosis as well as other topics such as talking to children about cancer and the cost of care. Healthy lifestyle classes include nutrition, exercise, meditation, art and others. All classes are free and all materials and supplies are provided, and each class/workshop is overseen by a licensed mental health professional. In 2017, there were 179 classes and workshops.
social activites and events: gckc was established as a community of support. Social activites provide a sense of community and connection to others. Social activities include a weekly pot-luck, as well as comedy nights, game nights, a night of remembrance and more; licensed mental health professionals are present as a therapeutic opportunity could occur. Gckc also opens the clubhouse for community open house events. In 2017, there were 102 social activities and events.
