Mission: Gfth serves the washington dc area homeless population by providing donated clothing to area homeless shelters and by using monetary donations to purchase new clothing for the homeless.
Programs: Used clothing drive: beginning in october area law firms, corporations and other entities with ties to the washington dc legal community have their employees donate used clothing. The clothing is collected by each participating entry and assembled at the organizations sorting site during the first weekend of december. Volunteers assist with the sorting of donated clothing, the fulfillment of clothing requests from area shelters and similar organizations, and the delivery of requested clothing to facilities. The entire process is completed during a 3 day weekend.
new clothing purchases: the organization purchases socks, underwear, hats, gloves, sweats, jackets and other items from wholesalers and donates these items to washington dc area homeless shelters and similar organizations. Donations are made during the late fall, in order to allow shelters to provide warm clothing to the homeless population they serve. Funds for the purchase of such items are collected from individual and coprorate donations made throughout the year, including the winter clothing drive and a "battle of the law firm bands" contest each summer.

As a colleague at a partner nonprofit serving the homeless, I am impressed by what Gifts for the Homeless accomplishes. They listen to their partner's needs and move a lot of people to generosity for DC's homeless. And, they are completely operated by volunteers, who obviously have a ton of commitment.
