The Friends group is a small, community based, local non profit that serves the community by increasing awareness of avalanche danger in the Mt Shasta backcountry. They do a great job with getting the word out and have become well known for providing public weather and snowpack information and for holding fantastic fundraisers that are well attended, fun and successful.
The group funds about 25% of the US Forest Service's Mt Shasta Avalanche Center operational budget and up to 2011 was completely volunteer based- no employees.
It is refreshing to see such positive results from such a small community.
