Mission: Protect/enhance minnesota river valley.
Programs: Communication outreach - provided financial support through a mcknight grant for staffing of the minnesota river congress. The minnesota river congress is a citizen led group of individuals and organizations concerned about the minnesota river valley. The friends of the minnesota valley, in cooperation with the lower minnesota river watershed district, sponsored informational booths at ten county fairs throughout the state of minnesota.
conservation - the friends of the minnesota valley took steps towards creating a river watch on the minnesota river. River watch is a high school student engagement program that conducts water quality monitoring and environmental advocacy. A similar program has been highly effective in building basin wide support for water quality initiatives in the red river valley.
friends of high island is a project of the friends of the minnesota valley and has been working to draw attention to the lake and watershed through the improvement of water quality and recreational opportunities. Currently the group is providing cost-share funds to install conservation practices including rock tile inlets and working on a conservation drainage project. They have also been involved with the minnesota department of natural resources to designate high island lake as a wildlife lake to enhance waterfowl habitat and improve fisheries.
