Mission: Focis provides a scientific forum to foster the cross-disciplinary approach to improving human health through immunology.
Programs: The annual meeting brings together approximately 1,000 clinicians, academicians, and scientists from multiple disciplines and areas of expertise including multiple sclerosis, diabetes, crohn's and colitis, dermatology, and rheumatology.
focis has the following educational courses: advanced course, entrepreneurs in clinical academia, interventional immunology course, basic immunology in medicine course, computational immunology course, basic immunology in medicine to go, and translational immunology update. Advanced course invited speakers lecture on the major topics in cellular and molecular immunology, including innate immunity, b cells, t cells, and cytokines. Special sessions cover new advances in interventional clinical immunology and the molecular and genetic basis of immune-mediated diseases. There will be ample opportunity for students to interact with the faculty outside the lecture room. Entrepreneurs in clinical academia designed to educate clinical researchers in the world of business acumen and the process of drug development, from preclinical to clinical. Interventional immunology course familiarizes practicing physicians with the scientific basis of novel immune therapies, their clinical applications, and possible side-effects and limitations. Basic immunology in medicine course review selected topics in basic immunology, with emphasis on recent advances and issues that are relevant to the pathogenesis and treatment of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. Computational immunology course is aimed at scientists involved or interested in the use of multi-dimensional data generated by modern genomics and proteomics technologies such as mass/flow cytometry, next-generation sequencing and microarrays. The course will also provide a better basic understanding of modern statistical and mathematical concepts necessary for their analysis and interpretation. Basic immunology in medicine to go is an up-to-date, clinically relevant overview of how the immune system functions and malfunctions, presented in a manner that is accessible and of interest to individuals with various levels of scientific knowledge. The course helps industry employees understand the clinical relevance, mechanisms of actions and potential complications of drugs their companies are developing or marketing in the area of immune/inflammatory diseases. Translational immunology update is a quarterly e-publication and members only benefit that includes reviews of recently published articles in journals in the field as well as original articles on phenotyping and novel therapeutic approaches. It also includes a summary of late phase clinical trials of interest to the focis community.
