Causes: Centers to Support the Independence of Specific Populations, Health, Human Services
Mission: Connecting families, educating communities and supporting children living with diabetes since 1984.
Programs: Camp: DYS offers 4 camp sessions for ages 5-17. At camp, we give Type 1 campers powerful tools to learn how to take care of themselves even after camp is over. Many campers make friendships at camp that last a lifetime, and many campers go on to become counselors and medical staff. DYS is proud to have never turned a family away for financial reasons in our nearly 40-year history.
School Support: For absolutely no cost to the family or school, DYS will send a diabetes nurse educator to any school that wants to learn more about Type 1 diabetes in the classroom. Many school staff have not worked with T1D before or might need a simple refresher for a student, and we are more than happy to provide both. In the past 3 years, DYS has completed training for more than 300 facilities.
Family Programs: DYS realizes that helping parents feel connected and supported is of paramount importance when living with Type 1 diabetes. Each year, DYS hosts a variety of family programs designed for families to connect with one another at local venues such as Mud Hens baseball games, ice skating, and so much more. Programs are low cost for our families and are spread out within our 34 county service area.
