Mission: What We Do
Crossroads collects surplus food from supermarkets, distributors, bakeries and other sources and distributes it to other organizations who feed the poor and hungry.
There is a large amount of waste in the food industry. When newly baked bread is delivered to a supermarket, the old goes out. The old is often still in date, not yet "day old", but it must go to make room for the latest shipment.
When a produce distributor delivers fresh produce to a market, it must be able to remain a day or two in the store, and still be not quite fully ripe, so that it will keep for a few days in the buyers'homes. If a produce distributor has fruit or vegetables that are nearly ripe, it's too late to send it to the market.
This surplus food used to be thrown out. Often the distributor or market had to pay to have it dumped. Now, it is collected by Crossroads and other food banks and distributed to those who may not have been able to afford it from the store.
Programs: Provide low cost and free food to families and individuals provide free food through churches and other non profits procured food from donors trucked into area
