Programs: The coastal watershed council (cwc)is a science-based nonprofit based in santa cruz, ca. Since 1995, cwc has been working towards their mission of preserving and protecting coastal watersheds through community stewardship, education and monitoring. In recent years cwc has focused on transforming the san lorenzo river to become a healthy and thriving river ecosystem surrounded by clean, safe and welcoming parks and open spaces that are a draw for the community and build a sense of pride for santa cruzans. Last year cwc trained 295 volunteers, contributing 5,144 hours of their own time studying local creeks and rivers, generating 2,536 scientifically valid data points in 52 water bodies along california's central coast and removing 1,644 square feet of invasive species from the san lorenzo river. Cwc also inspired and educated 3,452 youth to become future scientists, watershed enthusiasts and informed residents through our classroom presentations, field trips, after school programs and summer camps with middle and elementary schools and clubs, including english language learners and at-risk youth.
