Mission: Everyone knows how stressful school can be. Students and teachers alike often arrive struggling with and distracted by emotions, worries, and physical aches and pains. With distractions like these, effectively educating students can be a real challenge. What''s missing is a way for everyone to address and move past these physical and psychological issues. In as little as five minutes of class time, CEL''s Mindful, Stretching and Breathing Methodology provides the critical missing piece. The Coalition for Emotional Literacy (CEL)is an advocacy support group connecting people of all ages to their bodies, minds and emotions. This allows spirit to engage, which manifests optimal wellness, happiness and performance. As a result of practicing CEL''s Methodology students and teachers become happier and more adept at:Focusing their mindsObserving their self-talkMaintaining commitments through hardshipsUnderstanding themselves and othersNavigating the circumstances of their lives more skillfullyEngaging in academics with contentment and accountabilityDemonstrating self-reflective and corrective skillsAs a direct result of these skills participants spontaneously and inevitably self-generate:On-task attitudes and behaviorsInclination to participate, connect and belongBetter wellness habits, lessening compulsive behaviorsCompassion towards self and othersAcademic excellenceEducators note:Participation, comprehension and accountability improvesSchool becomes a relaxed, enjoyable environment for everyonePerformance, attendance and graduation rates increase
Programs: CEL's Teacher Training Program gained Austin Independent School Approval in 2005 through 2008 and is in the process of being extended.CEL's curricula pro-actively teach cooperative learning, critical thinking and problem solving strategies for improved student performance. Teachers present and explain information and allow students to discover subject matter from various perspectives. Students learn to respect diversity and to demonstrate their intelligences through individual and collaborative projects and state and national tests.CEL uses existing curricula or develops multi-disciplinary-project based curricula infused with emotional intelligence, physical fitness, and awareness building components. They are designed to teach students to reflect, understand, and apply academics in meaningful and fun ways. The academic subjects become the ?character builders,? the vehicles for students to learn more about themselves, each other, and how to navigate through life. The Girl Ann Youth Project(4th-8th grades) teaches emotional intelligence, physical fitness, and awareness techniques through meteorology, aspects of geometry, animal care and the creative arts. This program stands alone or can be used as an insertion course with other curricula and/or as an elective.Business:The Art and Science of Relationships (BASR)(6th-12th grades)developed through a federal research grant awarded by Governor Perry in Austin, TX. CEL in collaboration with Garza Independence High School and others developed a Texas Education Agency (TEA) approved Business Curriculum, BASR. BASR incorporates emotional, physical and awareness-focusing instructions to prepare students to be career ready. This curriculum shows students how to stay on task, be a team player, think outside the box, have high expectations, present well and preside over meetings. Students learn how to receive critical evaluations, follow and give instructions and be a real person in a real world.Sovereignty is a multi-disciplined life skills curriculum seeking funds to teach students how to be on-task and manage their lives successfully in and outside of school. Sovereignty interfaces with the Texas Essential Knowledge Skills Curriculum, Skills for Living, an elective.Sovereignty teaches students how to: identify and handle their feelings and emotions; relax their bodies, and calm their minds while gaining TEKS mastery in the TEA approved curriculum Skills for Life. The Sovereignty/Skills for Life instructors provide persistent and consistent discipline to reinforce the thoughts, feelings, and social interactions that keep students on-task.
