Causes: Religion, Religion-Related
Mission: City on a hill's mission is threefold: 1) to help central city youth break the cycle of generational poverty, 2) to improve the quality of life in our neighborhood, and 3) to provide training on urban poverty and racial justice issues.
Programs: City on a hill served low-income children, youth and families with a wide range of programs. In 2017, 207 youth were served in the afterschool center, 163 children attended the super saturday summer program, and 46 children attended weekly jam. In addition, 98 youth participated in our camping, college and career field trips, 54 youth attended youth group, 164 youth participated in our educational advancement program, and 43 youth participated in our community service and youth employment programs. Families were also supported: 154 children and parents attended our family christmas party, 163 attended our mother's and father's day events, emergency services were provided for 132 individuals, and our home visitation and adopt-a-block outreaches served 552 families.
in 2017, city on a hill served 1,234 low-income, medically underserved adults, providing 3,245 health visits. Clients included many who were homeless, elderly, disabled, or ex-offenders. Among all ethnic groups served 57% were men and 43% were women and 71% were african american. We provided health screenings, doctor visits, medications, eye exams, glasses, physical and occupational therapy, foot care, and health education. We also offered a medical homes for the homeless program providing health education/coaching to 444 men, wellness and parenting education for 104 mothers, navigation training to 209 individuals, and care in our free clinic for 195 people. We also provided groceries, hygiene kits, hot meals, and referrals for housing, employment, addiction services.
city on a hill provided a variety of training programs focused on poverty and justice issues, including poverty simulations, racial residue training, urban plunge weekends, four to six-day short-term mission trips, and innovative compassion events. In 2017 there were a total of 998 participants in these programs designed to educate and mobilize better resourced individuals to meet the needs of underprivileged residents of milwaukee and their own communities. City on a hill served as a volunteer site for service groups from 98 churches and universities and mobilized a total of 1,365 individual volunteers. We also hosted several college programs.
city on a hill provided space for several other nonprofit, educational, and minority-led organizations offering a variety of services including nutrition services for children living in poverty; cultural competency training for health professionals, community health worker training, and health career education for minority students; legal services for low income residents; and counseling and employment assistance for ex-offenders.
