Mission: Our mission is to provide programs and services to children and adults with sickle cell disease and their families helping them to face the educational, social and economic challenges caused by the disease; Our commitment to community education, awareness and outreach, and support for research are natural extensions of this mission.
Results: Our children are growing up healthier, more motivated and are "Living Well with Sickle Cell" and remain hopeful that a cure is coming soon. Through the support of the Educational Advocacy Program, our students are achieving academic success. The average grade point averages have risen from 2.0 to 3.1 and the absences have decreased from an average of 29 days per year to a low of 10 days annually. We are SMASHING Sickle Cell with our Stay Motivated, Active, Smart and Healthy (SMASH) Sickle Cell Wellness Program open to the entire family where we combine educational topics, coping and a physical activity twice per month.
Target demographics: Children, Adults and their families face the educational, social and economic challenges caused by sickle cell disease.
Direct beneficiaries per year: More than 500 families in the Greater Pittsburgh area, in Allegheny and surrounding counties.
